Huang Yuxing is that kind of artist who relies on an instinctual nature to paint; and he does anything but hide from this instinct, he is equally as open about his worship of pop star Jay Chou or Marlene Dumas. With gloomy hues he manifests feelings of trepidation and the excitement of spying, creating paintings capable of arousing nervous hormonal palpitations from the very depths of our hearts.
Huang Yuxing venerates a high degree of freedom in his lifestyle; he enjoys travel and a consumer's lifestyle, and has a downcast and restrained manner in any social interaction. His hobby is raising cold- blooded animals, a past time that reveals a psychological repulsion to intimacy–– his lizards will never become attached, and likewise he never needs to get cuddly. This nature of lukewarm intimacy penetrates Huang Yuxing's works. His "Diary" series touches upon a broad range of content from internet suicide to a bird's eye view of Hainan island, each one is painted on a keyhole shaped board. No matter if the depicted landscape is a bedroom or the sky, viewers invariably become peeping toms, interlopers, and treated to at least one greedy glance via Huang Yuxing's flat keyholes. In 2007, he began using printing ink and spray paint on 25cm Ikea ready - made clocks in completing his series "When I Need Love". He attempts to lead viewers into spying onto a secret garden of desire - physical brutality, recreation and loneliness are equally represented within his unique painting vocabulary. Behind each painting, the endless tick-tock of the clocks are a cruel and vivid thread that pull these works together.
Huang Yuxing's goodness lies in his purity and truthfulness; he is never hypocritical and never evil, but is invariably naked, stimulating our senses with his innocent candor. As a queer artist, at the very least he can be like the great modernist masters, strive for a profound transformation of human life and fate.
