Zhang Wei (b.1952) Zhang Wei began to study painting at the age of 19 (1971). In 1972, Zhang Wei met Ma Kelu, Xie Yali, Li Shan, Peng Gang and others. In 1973 and 1974, he met Zhao Wenliang, Yang Yushu, Shi Xixi, Zheng Ziyan, Wei Hai, Wang Aihe and others, and formed a loose group, which was later called "Anonymous Painting Club". In 1975, he held the "Eleven Underground Painting Exhibition" with Zhao Wenliang, Bao Lean and others at his home on the third floor of the Fusuijing Building in Beijing, laying the foundation for the first public exhibition of the "Anonymous Painting Exhibition" in 1979. In 1979, he participated in the first public exhibition of Beijing Beihai Huafangzhai "Anonymous Painting Exhibition". In the 1980s, Zhang Wei met Zhu Jinshi and others and formed a new group with them. At this stage, Zhang Wei created a large number of abstract paintings and held many exhibitions at home. In May 1985, Zhang Wei organized a 10-person painting exhibition at the Chaoyang Theater in Beijing, which was banned on the same day. (The participating artists include Tang Pinggang, Zhu Jinshi, Ma Kelu, Feng Guodong, Zhang Wei, Wang Luyan, Gu Dexin, Yang Yiping, Qin Yufen and Ma Desheng) In the same year, together with Zhu Jinshi, Ma Kelu, Wang Luyan and others, the "Seven Artists Exhibition" was held at the home of American journalist He Mole in the diplomatic apartment. American artist Rauschenberg came to visit. In 1986, he participated in the "Chinese Avant-Garde Art Exhibition" held in the United States and has since gone abroad. During his stay in New York, he continued to engage in abstract art creation and held many solo exhibitions. After moving back to Beijing in 2005, he also held many solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions. From September 2006 to June 2007, he also participated in the "Anonymous Painting Festival Retrospective Tour Exhibition" (Beijing, Guangdong, Shanghai). His works are collected by many important art institutions at home and abroad. Now he lives and works in Beijing.
