Preface
Ju Ting's art, from a material perspective, connects the Artist's expertise in print making with the academic traditions of exploring various types of materials. It also eliminates the aesthetic space between 'painting' and 'print-cutting'. By directly emphasizing 'print-cutting' as her artistic niche while replacing its replicational functionality with a focus on material form, she has rescued her work from the domain of the image. The forms of material that Ju Ting has shaped create an optical illusion of planes. Shapes descend through layers and textures, follow the advancing horizon line, and evolve such that seeing it becomes a kind of process composed of the viewer's preconceived ideas of shape. Her method of working has inherited the manual labor modes of traditional artists, and as she engraves a kind of characterization of subjectivity communicated by her own body into the layers of acrylic, she maintains the natural relationship between spirit and thought. Even her visual language avoids reproduction, but within the colored layers of industrially produced acrylic paint, we can still feel the real world's charm. It is the exact kind of charm that 19th century French poet Claude Baudelaire, when speaking on modernism, described as 'the eternal and the unchanging'.
