Star Gallery Is pleased to announce Li Jikai’s solo exhibition “The Burdens of My Life”, running from the 29th of September until the 28th of October, 2018. It will be Li Jikai’s first solo show with Star Gallery.
In modern Chinese, “包袱” (bao fu), is a polysemy, one meaning being connected to a certain burden, such as the burden of thought, historical baggage, and also a crosstalk term referring to the jokes thrown out after careful laying. The baggage in Li Jikai’s paintings lacks a feeling of heaviness. Sometimes it resembles a lump of soft, collapsed cotton, often wrapped in a baby’s cloth. Sometimes reminiscent of a broken burlap sack that flaps in the wind.
This exhibition will focus on the diversity of Li Jikai’s paintings from 2016 to 2018. On canvas, ceramics and various textures of paper, he has rich experiments with charcoal, acrylic, watercolour, crayons and markers, in order to seek novelty in painting. Both of the shape and style of his painting have demonstrated a tendency of unconsciousness.
“I want to paint in a sloppy way.” Li Jikai does not want the information conveyed by the work to be limited to “beauty” and become a decoration on the wall. What he pursues is a painting related to life. In addition to his well-known characters, the exhibition will also feature Li Jikai’s “manuscripts” including some watercolor paintings drawn on his journeys and graffiti sketched on his notebook.
