Introduction
Jin Nv's first solo exhibition is comprised of five new works. The two large-scale fiberglass sculptures, Grow Up (2006) and Night (2008) were produced during her studies at China Central Academy of Art. The three small-scale resin sculptures, made between 2010 and 2011, all share a consistent theme. That is, they are all intimately related to the artist's emotional experience. In the four years from graduation until her first solo exhibition, the range of Jin Nv's work reveal a steady maturation of her views on life and art. Concurrently, the amount of time Jin Nv has spent experimenting with sculptural materials has gradually produced the singularity and perfection evidenced through her craftsmanship. Lovers and Intimate Alienation form a sequential narrative, the respective subjects of which address woman throughout the process of pregnancy to childbirth. What is actually being reflected, however, is the artist's evolving perspective on the relationship between the sexes. What she's probing for in these two works is a deeper emotional relationship than is evident in Night. At times the relationship between woman and man is like the relationship between mother and child. It is a woman's instinct to take care of a man. During childhood one develops a strong emotional attachment to one’s parents. Once mature and self-reliant, this same intimacy is projected onto the object of one’s romantic love." Lovers and Intimate Alienation are about the transposition of these two kinds of love, while Ruo Shui is more autobiographical in nature, an expression of the artist's perception of her gender roles in social life.
