Introduction

Returned after three years of departure, Star Gallery is glad to announce the opening of “2nd Qiu Jiongjiong Art Festival” on May 18, 2013 at both the gallery’s 798 space and Qikeshu space. This exhibition marks Qiu Jiongjiong’s fourth solo show at Star Gallery, thereby presenting 28 of his paintings and 20 clips out of the 5 independent films related to Qiu Jiongjiong produced over the last years.

The “painting unit”, will be shown at the Qikeshu space consists of six themes, the Clown, the Eminent Monk, Legend, On the Scene, Hormone and My Father. These themes overlap with each other, revealing Qiu Jiongjiong’s complex inner world. Qiu unraveled diverse and various experiments through ink painting on paper, oil painting on plank and oil paintings on canvas. Moreover, this art festival collaborates with China Independent Film Archive (CIFA) in presenting the “film unit”.  Curated by film critic and organizer, Zhang Yaxuan, raw footages shot during the making the independent films are going to be screened at the 798 gallery space, providing a new angle in viewing Qiu Jiongjiong’s filmic endeavors.

For the exhibition, a catalogue entitled, “2nd Qiu Jiongjiong Art Festival” will be published by China Today Art Museum Publishing House. Modeled on the previous catalogue of the art festival, the volume will not only include Qiu Jiongjiong’s new artworks, but will also include Qiu Jiongjiong’s artist statement, the artist Lu Xin’s critiques, as well as Zhang Yaxuan’s interview with Qiu Jiongjiong –a volume that puts Qiu Jiongjiong’s creative experience of the last three years in detailed order.
